The Importance of Nursery Rhymes in Literacy Development

by Melissa Droegemueller | Jan 9, 2019 | Literacy & Language

Everything I know about early literacy, I learned from Mem Fox. Our first child was born in the summer of 2008, about 14 weeks before her due date. I spent the first six weeks of her life (AKA “maternity leave”) sitting in an uncomfortable chair by her isolette. I...

We love to get outside as much as possible and exp We love to get outside as much as possible and experience sensory play out in the real world: bare feet on grass, hands in sand or mud, splashing in puddles...

But sometimes, the weather can be unpredictable, and it's nice to have the opportunity for sensory play inside as well.

My little tactile learner loves to have something to play with in the living room -- LEGO bricks, one of our busy boxes, or a sensory bin are her go-to activities.

This is a look back at a bin she put together herself: orange rice, pebbles, foil leaves, and sunflower seeds!

I am intentionally choosing to slow down and rest I am intentionally choosing to slow down and rest more.

Rest looks different for all of us, but for me -- it means setting a bedtime on my phone and reading a chapter or two before lights out. Taking an afternoon nap when I have a headache. Walking with my husband a couple times a week.

I'm tired of the hustle and feeling like my self-worth is tied to my productivity.

The first week of October is always our fall break. I cannot wait to relax and have fun with my kids. Maybe I'll read a book or two from this stack?

No pressure, though.

It’s completely normal to worry that our kids ar It’s completely normal to worry that our kids are falling behind, whether it’s reaching developmental milestones, keeping up with their peers, or meeting state standards.

In this episode of Learn Their Way, we’ll share a few more tips for personalizing learning for your kids, at home and in the classroom. We’ll also provide a bit of context and lots of encouragement when it comes to healthy child development. All that really matters is that our kids are making progress at their own pace.

Simple shape match activity! When our youngest wa Simple shape match activity!

When our youngest was in preschool, she loved the sound of Velcro tearing apart. I made this easy busy board, and she LOVED it.
Both of my kids love to read. But while my oldest Both of my kids love to read.

But while my oldest is drawn to stories, my youngest much prefers non-fiction books -- the meatier, the better.

It's not unusual to come across her reading an encyclopedia before bed.

Which do your kids prefer: fiction or non-fiction?
